Ask most people when they plan to retire and they'll say 65. Maybe 67 if they're being realistic about finances. But almost nobody asks: why 65? Who decided that's the magic number? Here's what's going to surprise you. 65 isn't based on any scientific understanding of human aging. It's not when people naturally become unable to work. It wasn't even chosen with worker wellbeing in mind. The number 65 was selected by German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1889 as the eligibility age for the world's first government pension. And when he chose it, average life expectancy was around 45 years old. He picked a number most workers would never reach. We're organizing our entire lives around a retirement age that was specifically chosen because most people were expected to die before they could collect. In this episode: ➔ How Bismarck used pensions to prevent socialist revolution, not to help workers ➔ Why America adopted Germany's number without questioning it during the Great Depression ➔ The staggering math problem created by people now living 18-20 years past 65 ➔ Why a construction worker and a consultant shouldn't have the same retirement age ➔ What "flexible transition systems" could look like if we redesigned retirement today We're living 30+ years longer than people in 1889. Working completely different jobs. With entirely different capabilities. Yet we still treat 65 as the magical threshold when you become "old" and should stop contributing. Your life doesn't have to be organized around arbitrary numbers chosen in the 19th century. The question is whether we're brave enough to imagine alternatives. 🔔 Subscribe for more on the workplace norms we accept without questioning. My Newsletter: https://newsletter.ginnyclarke.com/si...
