I was just getting over the background conversation when a sudden bump made me think: 'it sounds like someone just dragged in their old Uher and stuck the mike on the table somewhere among the beer bottles.' From the sleeve notes it appears I wasn't that far off the mark: "I Can’t Get Started is a gem and certainly deserves inclusion but you will miss the opening seconds of the piece. Richard Alderson, the engineer, had no way of knowing that the blues would go on for so long, nor did he know that Roy would go immediately into another tune and it takes just those few seconds to reload a tape machine. As to Blue Moon (Roy’s only number on the album where he is accompanied by Earl) Roy was off mike and it took a second to move the mike over to him." Excellent! Sorry not to include the Hines numbers, but I'm afraid that florid 'look what I can do!' style - what I think of as Las Vegas lobby music - really doesn't do it for me. So the three tracks here are all basically about Roy Eldridge. Recording oddities notwithstanding, wonderful stuff. Anyway, enough of that. Four musicians: Earl Hines (p) Roy Eldridge (t) George Tucker (b) Oliver Jackson (d) ...and three tracks: Blue Moon I can't get started Blues for old "N'S" Hope you like them as much as I do.
