The Trump administration's direct talks with Hamas is "one of the smartest US policy moves in ages" argues Chris Doyle, director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding. Historically, the US has adhered to the mantra “the US does not negotiate with terrorists”, a stance that has kept it from engaging with Hamas since the group’s designation by the US as a terrorist organisation in 1997. However, US hostage negotiator Adam Boehler met with Hamas representatives in February during talks in Doha, a move that left Israeli leadership "seething" Doyle says. But the talks underscored a key point: while Trump is a staunch supporter of Israel, he is not entirely beholden to its policies, Doyle argues. “The Trump administration does not apologise,” Doyle explains. When Boehler appeared on CNN, he made it clear: “We’re not an agent of Israel.” Doyle argues that engaging with Hamas doesn't amount to endorsement but reflects a pragmatic approach: dialogue, even with hostile parties, can lead to results and unlock unforeseen possibilities. “For once", Doyle concludes, "Trump is spot on."
