Allegro vivace From the program notes: Franz Schubert's ninth and last completed symphony, owes its title of Great to its majesty of sound. The composer completed the work in his last year of life, and sent it to the Vienna Philharmonic, but the musicians refused to play it due to its difficulty. The Ninth symphony was thus premiered by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Felix Mendelssohn in 1839, and the delighted Robert Schumann called it "the biggest instrumental work after Beethoven's death". It was precisely Beethoven who was Schubert's inspiration, and Schubert's Ninth reaches for the heights of the earlier composer's last symphonic work.
