Ludwig van Beethoven Cavatina and Grosse Fuge op. 130/133 string orchestra version: Marien van Staalen Autunno Ensemble Marien van Staalen, conductor November 8, 2015 Muziekcentrum van de Omroep, Studio 1 Hilversum, The Netherlands The last movement of Beethoven's Quartet no 13 op. 130, the Grosse Fuge, did not get a warm reception from contemporary listeners, musicians and critics. Beethoven's publisher, Artaria, urged the composer to write a new finale, and the Grosse Fuge was edited separately as op. 133. The separation from the string quartet brings a string orchestra version into view. The wider range of such an ensemble, both in dynamics and in size, can do justice to the tremendous power and scope of the fugue. Nevertheless, the arrangement should be made very carefully. Beethoven's notes are to be fully respected; in particular the addition of a double bass, one octave below the cello part, may never result in incorrect chords. The orchestral version performed on this video tries, by adding a number of dynamics, to keep the texture as transparent as possible. Subtle divisions are applied to make the most difficult passages playable for a string group. In this arrangement, as in the original quartet, the Grosse Fuge is preceded by the Cavatina. The thematic connection and the emotional content of both pieces make this combination beautiful and logical.
