Join Scott Hatcher for an introduction to volunteering your GIS skills to help aid organizations through the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Tasking Manager. The Humanitarian Open Street Map (HOTOSM) team contributes to relief efforts all over the world by coordinating volunteers to help map vulnerable communities. This team has written software to organize the collective mapping efforts of volunteers towards worthy causes all over the world. This work is complex, but one part of the chain is "remote mapping" at "mapathons". Remote mapping uses volunteer time, and easily accessible software, to digitize features of interest for aid groups and community groups working on the ground. These "mapathons" often last for hours. At this workshop I will provide a brief introduction to the HOTOSM tasking manager, as well as the iD editor GIS software, so that participants can begin mapping at home. We will walk through the entire process from start to finish, and have some fun doing work for a good cause.
