Patricio Aylwin (1990–1994) President of Chile... Patricio Aylwin Azúcar (November 26, 1918 – April 19, 2016) was a prominent Chilean politician and the first democratically elected president after the end of the military dictatorship in Chile. Aylwin was born in Viña del Mar, Chile, and studied law at the University of Chile, where he earned a law degree and became a lawyer. Aylwin began his political career as a member of the Christian Democratic Party, and held several political positions before becoming president. He was a member of the Chilean Senate, and worked as a university professor and lawyer. During the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, Aylwin was a prominent opponent of the regime, and helped organize the political opposition. In 1989, Aylwin was elected president of Chile in the first democratic elections after 17 years of military rule. He took office on March 11, 1990, and his main goal was to rebuild democracy in the country and promote human rights. During his presidency, Aylwin worked to achieve national reconciliation and address the violations committed during the dictatorship. One of Aylwin's most notable achievements was the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which aimed to investigate human rights violations that occurred during the Pinochet regime. The Commission produced a comprehensive report on the violations, which contributed to promoting justice and reconciliation in the country. Aylwin also worked to strengthen the Chilean economy by implementing economic reforms aimed at achieving growth and stability. After his presidency ended in 1994, Aylwin continued his political and social work, participating in numerous national and international initiatives to promote democracy and human rights. He received numerous international awards and honors in recognition of his efforts to promote democracy and reconciliation. Patricio Aylwin died on April 19, 2016, at the age of 97. Aylwin is remembered as a wise statesman and courageous leader who contributed significantly to the rebuilding of Chilean democracy and the promotion of human rights. His presidency was a turning point in Chile's history, as he successfully led the country toward a more democratic and just future.
