This hymn is dedicated to those that have been affected by tragedy and to honour those who have lost their lives because of it. 🙏🏻 Horatio Spafford the composer of this hymn had many tragedies in his life. One of the most horrific was that he sent his wife and 4 daughters ahead of him on a ship to Europe. The boat never made it and he lost his daughters in the ship wreck. His wife was miraculously saved and when she got to dry land she telegrammed her husband these words “saved alone”. When Horatio later went to meet his wife as he was sailing the captain came to him and said, “we believe this is the spot your daughters perished”. He later went to his room and not being able to sleep these words came to him “It Is Well”. He later penned this beloved hymn. 🙏🏻😢 Growing up in a small town I know most of the people in the town, and I can’t tell you how many times I have played this song for friends and relatives funerals.
