Mountain Men Mocked His 'Stupid' Fire-Starting Method Using Pine Cones - Until Winter Proved It Saved Hours of Work In 1860s Rocky Mountains, a trapper developed a systematic method of collecting and storing dried pine cones as fire-starting kindling. While other trappers laboriously split kindling wood daily (time-consuming work with frozen hands in winter), he'd simply grab 2-3 dried pine cones from his supply, and they'd ignite instantly, burning hot enough to light larger logs within minutes. Other trappers mocked him for "gathering squirrel food" all fall instead of properly preparing kindling. But his method had multiple advantages: 1. Pine cones were FREE and abundant - just pick them up 2. They stayed dry when properly stored (under cover) 3. They ignited in ANY weather - even damp wood would light once pine cones got going 4. No axe work required - no splitting kindling in freezing conditions 5. Resinous pine cones burned so hot they'd light even slightly damp firewood During a brutal 1867-68 winter, when temperatures stayed below -20°F for weeks, his pine cone fire-starting saved 1-2 hours daily of struggling with frozen kindling. Other trappers were wasting precious time and energy splitting frozen wood just to get fires started.
