Proton eMas 7 Premium Test Drive - More Pros Than Cons

The Proton eMas 7 has remained the top EV seller for a few months since it's launch up until the launch of the new Tesla Model Y (Juniper) here in Malaysia recently. There is little doubt that the eMas 7 will regain its crown in the not so distant future. The main one being the bouncy handling, which is more apparent for rear passengers. On 80% of roads in Penang, Malaysia, you'll hardly notice it. But when you do come across a noticeable depression or bump, there is a possibility that you'll be a centimeter or two off your seat if not belted down like what Lyna experienced. Drivers may also feel some body roll round bends but nothing too serious. That said, rumour has it that Proton will be looking to improve the ride and handling on CKD models going forward. I hope they sort out the grabby brakes too. At the very least, they eMas 7 should handle as well as the MGS5 EV. We're not sure if the recently launched (in China) Geely EX5/ Galaxy X5 with 500 km WLTP range will make its way to Malaysia as an eMas 7 variant. Hopefully it does. It does have a minimalist interior but nothing as sparce as a Tesla, Leapmotor C10 or an XPENG. It does have a dial and a few physical buttons on the center console. The Proton eMas 7 has loads of storage space. So much so that we're even willing to forgive the lack of a frunk. The car is rather spacious and thanks to its 1901 mm width, you can seat 3 people at the back comfortably in most cases. Leg room is generous too. Seats are comfortable, even more comfy than the seats on the Atto 3. Apple CarPlay will arrive first in a month or two and Android Auto will follow near the end of the year. The current price war among EV brands will benefit new owners due to the freebies and discounts offered. Naturally, early adopters won't be too pleased. At the time we shot this review, these are the prices of the two Proton eMas 7 variants after the RM4000 rebate: Prime RM105,800, Premium RM119,800. Freebies you'll get are as follows: 7 kW wall box charger, V2L adaptor, 5-year data package, Tyre repair/inflator kit & Emergency triangle In summary, as a family car, the Proton eMas 7 looks to be a good deal. We'd suggest the Premium variant. To make it even better, it needs more range, better handling and not so grabby brakes...and perhaps a frunk and tonneau cover.
