On May 27, 54 adolescent schoolgirls in Tokyo commit mass suicide by jumping in front of an oncoming train. Two nurses commit suicide by jumping out of a window at a hospital shortly after. A hacker named Kiyoko alerts three detectives—Kuroda, Shibusawa, and Murata—to a link between the suicides and a website that displays the number of suicides as red and white circles. On May 28, a bunch of teenagers at a high school jump off the roof during lunch, prompting the city to look for a "Suicide Club." The suicide epidemic had spread across Japan by May 29. Mitsuko is driving home when she is struck by Masa, her boyfriend, who has thrown himself from a roof. Mitsuko is transported to the police station for questioning, where she is strip-searched and a butterfly tattoo is discovered. On May 30, police received a call from a boy warning that another mass suicide will occur at the same platform that evening at 7:30 p.m. In order to avoid the incident, the detectives prepare a stake-out, but there is no suicide. Individual and small-scale group suicides continue to occur across Japan, taking the lives of countless people, including Kuroda's entire family. Kuroda gets a call from the boy who informed him about the 7:30 suicide, and he shoots himself.
