Gerek Meinhard is the first U.S. men's fencer ever to qualify for the cadet, junior and senior world teams all in the same year. Gerek started fencing at the age of nine and quickly climbed up the national and international rankings. At age of 16 he became the youngest National champion in foil. Moreover, he became the youngest male fencer who participated in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing from any nation - he was only 18 years old! With his wife and fellow team USA fencer Lee Kiefer, they competed in two Olympic games in 2012 and 2016. Sixth-year Notre Dame head coach Janusz Bednarski said “Gerek is a complete winning machine with superb technique and intelligent tactical abilities that make him possibly the most promising young foillist in the history of U.S. fencing”.
