Organized since 1810, it is a 16-18 day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first Sunday in October and is locally referred to as d’Wiesn after the colloquial name for the fairgrounds, Theresienwiese. An iconic part of Bavarian culture, more than six million international tourists attend this massive celebration, with numerous other cities around the world also holding Oktoberfest parties modeled after the original. As one would expect from a beer festival of this scale, extremely large quantities of beer from various local breweries are served at the Oktoberfest. In fact in 2013, over 7.7 million litres were consumed over the 16 day period. Besides beer, Oktoberfest also has several other attractions to offer, such as amusement rides, game & souvenir stalls, horse-riding, as well as a delectable spread of traditional Bavarian cuisine.
