A Tale of Two Cities: Dubai and Gaza

Charles Dickens wrote his very famous historical novel called “A Tale of Two Cities” in 1859. The novel takes place in London and Paris prior and during the French Revolution. The paragraph starting the novel has remained relevant throughout the ages: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way… “ I draw a comparison of this novel and this opening paragraph to present day, only the two cities are Dubai and Gaza. Personally, I doubt that the 100,000+ buildings destroyed in Gaza will ever be rebuilt. As climate mayhem accelerates, and people run out of materials and money to rebuild destroyed infrastructure, mass climate migration to new regions will occur. This will cause democratic governments to vanish, replaced by right-wing populist autocratic governments that eliminate immigration and construct heavily fortified and protective borders. Global turmoil for scarce resources will be the norm for our planet.
