Learning to enjoy hiking in the rain (and to be safe!) is an incredibly valuable skill! Consequences of wet and cold and be quite bad, and alternatively it can just be miserable. But! If you learn some basic skills and have the right gear backpacking in the rain can be a lot of fun! My first tip is to plan and prepare, and to know what you're getting yourself into! For example, a desert is going to require a lot less caution (in regards to rain) than say the Appalachian Trail where rain is an inevitability. You can look up historical weather data for an area to help with this. Seeing how much rain fell the last couple years, and what the temperature was, for the month you plan to be there. Also take note of the trail you hike, as if you're going to be above treeline with no natural shelter, you will want a more robust rain gear system. If you'll be surrounded by trees 100% of the time, it's less dangerous. I highly recommend carrying an umbrella for wet trips. It covers your body halfway, it covers your pack a bit, and they are super breathable! You can often leave your rain jacket half unzipped, if you have an umbrella. And given the shelter you can easily check your phone, or take a break wherever and whenever you want. Ziplocs are very valuable and on trips with rain you will want 3 - 5 of them! For your phone, flashlight, wallet, camera... The list goes on! I carry a bunch of quart sized ziplocs on wet trips. Rain jackets are a necessity for any hiking trip, anywhere. Not only do they keep you dry, they keep you warm! Most of the time an ultralight rain jacket like the budget friendly FroggToggs, or the Enlightened Equipment Visp, the LightHeartGear, or Montbell Versalite work great. They keep you 'dry enough' while adding warmth. Some trips and you gotta go heavier, I like the Patagonia Torrentshell. Pack your gear each day by making your rain gear always accessible, and at the top of your pack. I have my tent near the top so I can easily get it out to deploy if the weather gets bad. I have my jacket at the top, and I have ziplocs ready to go. Use a packliner to waterproof your pack, and keep wet things away from gear you want dry. I use a nyloflume pack liner. Rain pants and rain kilts are also great for wetter environments and can really add a lot of safety to your trip! Otherwise your shorts will get soaked, and that's never too fun. When it comes to camping, don't wait until the last moment to setup your tent. If you know a storm is coming, try to setup earlier in the day, and really look for a good spot. A good campsite will be naturally sheltered by trees and rocks, it will be lower in elevation. And of course, don't forget to test all your gear near home before you go to the wilderness! There is nothing worse than realizing your tent has a bunch of holes, or your rain jacket doesn't work once you're out there. 00:00 - Backpacking in the Rain 00:39 - Trip Planning 03:30 - Rain Gear 03:41 - Umbrellas 04:43 - Ziplocs 05:14 - Rain Jackets 07:17 - How to Pack Your Gear 08:13 - Pack Liner 09:21 - Rain Pants 11:09 - Tent Camping 12:08 - Test near home first :) Hiking Essentials Shirt! http://jupiterhikes.com/product/hikin...
