Lots of customers ask us how to use Sonic Presence microphones in Church particularly for music. Here is an interesting example that shows off the versatility of binaural sound. This is music for a funeral titled “Musikalische Exequien”, by H. Schütz a predecessor of J.S. Bach. It features a small chorus of 8 singers accompanied by pipe organ. Early in the piece Schütz uses a contrapuntal tenor voice, which we hear singing from the back of the church. Then, later in the piece he divides the chorus in two, so we hear a quintet singing on earth near the organ, while a trio of angles sing from heaven above on the balcony. All the sonic variety was captured with a single Sonic Presence SP15C microphone worn by the camera person. This is live performance filmed from a seat in the front pew about 10 feet behind the conductor. The church acoustics are reverberant, which makes recording challenging, but works nicely with this ensemble. Performed by Trinity Church Choir conducted by Avi Stein on June 4th , 2025 at Saint Paul’s Chapel in New York City. Filmed with an iPhone in Sonic Presence.
