Newark Flat Crossing – Britain’s Rare Mainline Rail Intersection

Just north of Newark Northgate Station on the busy East Coast Main Line lies the Newark Flat Crossing, where the Nottingham–Lincoln Line cuts directly across. This rare “diamond” or “double star” layout features eight interlocking crossings, allowing the two lines to intersect at an angle of roughly 44 degrees. Despite many proposals over the years to replace it with a grade-separated junction, none have come to fruition — and the original, high-maintenance design remains in service today. A first visit here in June 1992 captured everyday railway scenes of the time on video, followed by a return trip seven years later. By then, the Class 91 locomotives had subtly evolved in appearance, but much of the surrounding railway landscape remained unchanged.
