The "mongulu" is the typical habitat of the pygmy camps. It is built by the women who first cut young stems of 3 meters long and keep the top leaves to tie the weaving. Once the ground is levelled and cleared, a stem is planted deeply and then bent, forming a solid arch whose elevation will determine the height of the mongulu. Several other arches will form the main structure, which may be hemispherical or ovoid in shape. Leaves of the marantaceae plant, "maranta leuconeura", are cut, graded and bound into bundles before construction begins. The main vein of each leaf is split, allowing the arrangement of these vegetable tiles in the shape of a fish scale. A fire is then lit inside the mongulu, burning slowly. If it brings heat, it also drives away insects and allows the deposit of soot at the top of the hut, thus ensuring a better waterproofing.
