A couple weeks ago, my niece sent me a request to make the gamja-hotdog since she wasn't successful in making it. The gamja-hotdog is a hot dog dipped in batter and then covered in potato cubes. I've heard this is a popular street food in Korea. I've also seen a similar vendor in Japan but never had the chance to try it. It's a pretty heavy dish but it's worth a try once in your life. Here's my attempt at the gamja-hotdog. INGREDIENTS: For the batter: 1 cup warm water(Maybe a little more 15-30ml if the batter is too thick) 2 tablespoons white sugar 2 teaspoons dry yeast ½ teaspoon kosher salt 1¾ cup all purpose flour The rest: 1 package of your favourite hot dogs 1 package of wooden skewers(Make sure they fit the deep frying vessel) 1 package of frozen crinkle cut french fries 1 package of mozzarella cheese sticks 1 vegetable or canola oil for frying Ketchup, mustard, and sriracha for toppings DIRECTIONS: Note: The dough needs 1 hour to rise but you can do the remaining steps during that time 1. Combine 1 cup warm water and 2 tablespoons of sugar in a mixing bowl Mix until sugar dissolves. 2. Add 2 teaspoons of dry yeast and wait a couple of minutes until the yeast dissolves 3. Add ½ teaspoon kosher salt and 1¾ cup all purpose flour. Mix until there are no lumps 4. Cover and let it sit for an hour 5. Chop the french fries into little squares. Letting it defrost a little will make the cutting easier 6. Skewer the hotdogs and mozzarella cheese sticks 7. Dip the hotdogs/cheese sticks one at a time into the batter then cover with the french fries 8. Get the oil to a temp of 170°C. Try to maintain this heat in order to make the dish nice and crispy. It's tougher since the oil will lose temp when you put stuff in 9. Depending on the size of the gamja-dog, fry it for 5-7 minutes per side 10. Top with your favourite condiments. I like ketchup for sweetness. Mustard for for tanginess. Sriracha for spiciness.
