Building a New Testament Church Part 1

“You’re the Bible church, aren’t you?” This was the question of a grateful Roman Catholic priest after being presented with a cheque for an expensive new church roof by David Pawson on behalf of the church that had just read the Bible all the way through. This church was modelling itself on the New Testament church, and “Baptists financing Roman Catholics” was just one of the unexpected outcomes that its membership encountered as they sought to follow the Lord’s will. This exploration of how a church can be built in line with New Testament principles may surprise some. For instance, the New Testament church is not “a one-man outfit” but rather a collective effort, led by a team of elders, each with a different main role, requiring specific qualifications. David discusses how different ministries can be nurtured to enhance their effectiveness, and provides insight into the special ministries: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Importantly, he explains how the membership is heavily involved. David also looks at some pitfalls that are encountered by modern churches when they deviate from the New Testament church, including in the area of worship, which he argues should be corporate in nature. He also covers the appropriate size (and seating layout) of a congregation and stresses the importance of dividing into smaller congregations and cells to develop gifting as well as to enable participation. The requirements for membership of the New Testament church may be viewed as more stringent than those of most modern churches, particularly in the neglected area of discipline. David identifies several “basic requirements” that were normal in the early church but which are uncommon today — above all, “that they have repented, that they have believed in the Lord Jesus, that they have been baptised, and that they have received the Holy Spirit”. He adds: “I have yet to meet a church that makes those four simple requirements”.
