In 2008, Scottish comedian Janey Godley visited her friend’s elderly Aunt Katie in Glasgow. During a chat about the old days in Norman Street, Katie calmly revealed she had been a Norman Conk gang member who threw petrol bombs at the Billy Boys and once hurled a hammer at a man who had beaten a priest when she was just 15. Katie was not unique. She belonged to a forgotten chapter of Glasgow’s gang history where women were not just bystanders but active gangsters. They fought in street battles, threw petrol bombs and bricks, slashed rivals with razors, and helped run criminal operations that terrorized whole neighborhoods. This documentary uncovers the hidden role of these women during the razor gang wars of the 1920s and 1930s. It follows the women who stood alongside the Billy Boys, Norman Conks, and other gangs, the female crews who organized protection rackets, shoplifting rings, and blackmail schemes, and the systemic erasure that buried their stories for decades. Using historian Andrew Davies’ research, court records, witness statements, and family oral histories, this film exposes how women wielded straight razors, collected protection money, lied under oath to shield male gang members, and in some cases led their own feared operations. It also shows how Victorian ideas about femininity allowed their violence to be minimized by courts, journalists, and later historians. Discover Glasgow’s forgotten female gangsters – the women who threw petrol bombs at the Billy Boys, enforced protection rackets in Bridgeton, and proved that gang culture was never just a man’s world. This is the untold, violent legacy that still haunts Glasgow today. SOURCES USED: 1. Glasgow: City of Gangs - A new history by Andrew Davies https://glasgowgangs.com 2.
