The Feast of Bacchus by Velázquez, popularly known as "The Drunkards", is the artist's first attempt at depicting a mythological fable. This scene depicts the Roman god of wine, Bacchus, accompanied by satyrs that draws us into the world of fabulous stories on the left, while, on the right, a beggar and four men with weathered faces and lively expressions constitute the everyday realistic counterpoint. A young poet kneels before them to be crowned by the god. American Friends helps share the collection of the Museo del Prado with a weekly session in English on the Prado's social media.
