Join us as we take a fish-eye view of a kayak adventure, reacquaint ourselves with an old landmark, and get fooled by an optical illusion. Starting at Chikanishing Creek in Killarney Provincial Park, we'll paddle 16 km (10 miles) along the stunning northern shore of Georgian Bay, circumnavigating George Island near the town of Killarney. Accompanied by an old friend, we'll share his thoughts on the scenery we encounter. After shuttling a return vehicle to Killarney, we head out on the creek leading to Georgian Bay, feeling the anticipation build with each bend. Upon arrival, we share our initial impressions of the surrounding scenery. Georgian Bay, often referred to as the 6th Great Lake, is so large that it would rank among the top 20 largest freshwater lakes in the world if it were its own lake. Despite today's favorable paddling conditions, these waters can be treacherous, with sheltered bays behind tiny islands but many stretches offering no easy escape from sudden winds and waves. The crystal-clear water and stunning shoreline are irresistible. Even in calm weather, swells begin to build as we head toward the Killarney channel. We find a perfect spot to land the kayaks and enjoy lunch, marveling at the 1.5 billion-year-old pink granite bedrock and the yellow lichen banding. Though the camera didn't capture it well, the distant islands appeared as if their treetops were cut off at the same height, creating a peculiar optical illusion. The low-lying islands along this shoreline make for fun kayaking, with numerous opportunities to duck into protected shallow waters. We take full advantage of this before pausing at the Killarney East lighthouse, where my friend shares his thoughts on this unique Ontario landscape.
