LB1148 was inspired by families who reached out to share how outdated parentage laws are putting children and parents at risk. Nebraska currently lacks clear legal standards for determining parent-child relationships when assisted reproductive technologies are used, leaving families vulnerable to costly legal disputes and uncertainty about fundamental parental rights. Across the country, advances in reproductive medicine have made it possible for more people to become parents. But without modern legal protections, families can find themselves navigating confusing court battles over custody, inheritance, and parental recognition simply because the law has not caught up with medical reality. LB1148 would provide clarity and fairness by establishing consistent parentage standards that protect children, recognize intended parents, and reduce unnecessary litigation. This bill reflects a simple but essential principle: the law should support the families children are raised in, not create barriers or instability for them. Nebraska has the opportunity to strengthen family security, reduce legal confusion, and ensure our laws reflect the way families are formed today. LB1148 is an important step toward that goal.
