During both World Wars, a significant number of African soldiers served on French soil, leading to many interactions with local civilians. These soldiers often found themselves warmly welcomed into French homes, a stark contrast to the treatment they experienced back in the colonies. Their time in France allowed for numerous social encounters, not just through service-related activities but also through more personal connections. For instance, during world war one some African soldiers formed friendships or romantic relationships with French women they met in various ways – from being cared for by nurses when wounded, to spending time in several french towns during the winter months. These relationships ranged from platonic friendships to more intimate connections, sometimes resulting in marriages or families.
