May 26th, 2021 was poised to be a significant day for tornadoes in western Kansas. The environment was a powder keg waiting for a match. Strong capping was a concern to the south of the warm front draped across northern Kansas, but afternoon heating and an approaching disturbance were forecast to weaken the cap and allow severe storms to take off. The potential for significant tornadoes and more isolated convection popping of the dry line were too hard to resist for most, ourselves included, so we decided to take the gamble against the safer warm front play and target near Scott City, KS. Off to the east near Hays, Kansas, some storms had started earlier in the day and they were hanging there in place all day. Down by Scott City, Kansas, we finally saw one storm go up. It looked good. It was show time! However soon after we gave chase the storm started to look sickly and it seemed to be falling apart. We kept going for a bit and stopped to evaluate our options. After briefly heading back south hoping for another storm to form, my brother decided the cap would never break so we headed back north and resumed following the unhealthy storm. We spent hours following it and it never got itself together. Back to the south, where the forecast was still for significant tornadoes nothing was happening. Along the way off to our Northwest a new low precipitation storm was forming and we kept our eye on it. Soon that became our new target, though it too didn’t look all that special. Finally after refueling at the town of Oberlin, My brother Eric decided we would just chase this storm till night and parked on a dirt road adjacent to US 36 in tornado chasing defeat. What then unfolded was the most spectacular storm structure I have ever seen. The storm came right by us, slowly revealing its low precipitation supercell glorious structure. We were awestruck. We followed the storm till the light was gone, and then enjoyed a spectacular light show from the many storms on the way back to the hotel.
