On 24 September 1976, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was interviewed by ITN's Julian Haviland about the ongoing state of emergency in India. Since 25 June 1975, an emergency had been declared across the whole country: civil liberties were suspended, elections were cancelled, and Ms Gandhi was allowed to rule by decree without reference to Parliament. Haviland asked the prime minister whether the restrictions were still necessary more than a year into the Emergency. He also questioned Ms Gandhi about the detention of elderly members of the opposition, and the ongoing sterilisation campaign. Prime Minister Gandhi defended the Emergency as being in the interests of democracy and reiterated her desire to hold an election some time the following year. #India #IndiraGandhi #Gandhi #Emergency1975 #1975 #EmergencyInIndia #IndianDemocracy #IndianHistory #HistoryOfIndia #IndiraGandhiInterview #1970s #1976 #Dictatorship #Dictators #Dictator #StateOfEmergency To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/search/...
