Community Creates New Woodland In a quiet village near Melton Mowbray, a whole community has come together to plant over 13,000 trees within a 6-hectare field, improving wildlife habitats and increasing biodiversity. It has helped create lasting legacies for families, strengthened community bonds, improved people’s connectivity to nature and increased the size of our nature reserve here at Holwell. Creating a future woodland for wildlife and the community to enjoy An opportunity arose for us to create a new woodland at Holwell nature reserve, and although a daunting task for us to plant thousands of trees alone, we put a call out to the local community and received an immense response. Tree planting days were held throughout December and January, and each day was well attended with people braving the mud and near freezing temperatures to get the saplings in the ground. Over 13,000 trees across a 6-hectare field were planted and we are thrilled with the results, bringing us one step closer to making Leicestershire and Rutland a wilder place for nature. People from across the community came to help, from the children at Little Rascals Day Nursey to local businesses, many of the Trusts volunteers, staff and trustees and even a group who came down after hearing about it in the pub only the night before! These nature enthusiasts gave us the hands and time to get many of the trees into the ground in an extremely short space of time, and we want to say a big thank you to all who were involved with the project. The last of the 13,000 trees should be planted by the end of January and will provide an extended wooded area to the reserve that will be enjoyed and cared for, for years to come. Holwell nature reserve is a real hidden gem in the heart of Leicestershire. It is home to two species of bat, many wildflowers and mammals, and is a stunning mosaic of habitats. The newly planted woodland will improve the abundance of wildlife by extending both hedgerows and woodland, building on the work we have already put into the reserve such as the wildflower meadow areas and pond restoration work that has been completed recently. It is hoped that the newly planted woodland will attract an even wider range of species to the reserve. The idea for the new wood came about when the trust purchased the land adjacent to the nature reserve about four years ago. Nestled between two existing parcels of woodland, it was an opportunity to plant up the area and connect the two woodlands, increasing the size of the existing reserve and creating a better wildlife corridor full of biodiversity. 13,000 trees for biodiversity With money generously provided to Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust from the David Cock Foundation and the Forestry Commission - through the English Woodland Creation Grant (EWCO), there came an opportunity to plant a mix of native tree species with different growing rates to ensure a robust and biodiverse woodland for the future. In addition to providing funding, The Forestry Commission advised us on the best species and planting regime for the trees and shrubs. Improving the chances of the woodland's resilience to future changes in climate and to address the importance of carbon capture, the planting mix includes multiple species with no one single species making up more than 8% of the planted area. These species were selected by reviewing the soil and topography of the site, and for their properties as food plants and cover for native vertebrates and invertebrates. The tree species were further checked that they were most suited to the projected post 2080 climate. When the woodland is established, it will be an area of native trees and diverse wildlife for the whole community of Melton Mowbray and the surrounds, to enjoy. These trees will grow to become a part of the future woodland landscape for Leicestershire and Rutland. LRWT looks forward to capturing the same community spirit that enabled this project, to do even more for nature and our threatened wildlife. Our goals are to help reverse the decline in nature and provide more people with access to nature, both for their well being and in a bid to help tackle the current climate and environment emergency we are facing. If you would like to help us with our work, we are currently looking for partnerships and supporters to join with us to become the voice for nature, and we would be delighted to hear from you.
