Everyone was invited to join a virtual dawn smoking ceremony to acknowledge Australia Day - Survival Day in Mount Alexander Shire. Local Dja Dja Wurrung Elder Uncle Rick Nelson conducted a dawn smoking ceremony from the peak of Leanganook (Mount Alexander) at 6.00am on Tuesday 26 January 2021. The ceremony was an acknowledgment of our shared history and an expression of sorrow for the impacts of colonisation on all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It was followed by an annual Community Event at Victory Park in Castlemaine from 10.00am – 12.00 noon. Organised by Mount Alexander Shire Council in partnership with our local First Nations community to bring everyone together in a meaningful and respectful way. This project was assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council. Image - Richard Baxter Photography
