Many spectators and participants alike hoped this clash would end the conflict, but they were tragically mistaken, for the flawed generalship and heavy losses among King Charles I’s royalist army would lead to a deadlock that trapped the British Isles in bitter civil war for almost another two decades. Welcome to our third piece of the seventeenth century English Civil Wars, where we will explore the events surrounding Charles’ march on London and the campaign of 1643, culminating at the First Battle of Newbury.
