108 Lokesvaras series Episode 5: Representations for Inheritance & Revitalization

It is said that to understand Buddhist architecture in Nepal, one had better know the Japanese style Mandala. Why so? Let us take the Jana Bahal for an example. At the center of the main hall is the mandala of the Thousand-handed Lokesvara, and inside the attic with the Guan Yin as the center and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in their places. Outside the mandala both above and below and the Bodhisattvas flanking the two sides, totaling 108 Lokesvaras. Suppose we take a bird’s eye view, we see an obvious structure of the mandala, therefore, it is essential to appreciate the architecture of Newar Buddhism. The concept of mandala proper and its relationship to Vajrayana has been quite close, whereas Vajrayana itself is a diversification per se. Then, between Guan Yin and Vajrayana are there any relations? The India-born Vajrayana ( Buddhist Tantra ) first reached China and was then brought back to Japan by Master Kong Hai, as Chinese Tantrayana in Tang China had difficulties spreading to the extent that it its almost disappeared. Shingon Buddhism(Tōmitsu), therefore, is thus regarded as the last manifestation and the final ways of the Indian Buddhism which reflects the final stage of Mahayana in China.
