Based in Gloucester, The Sempre Group offers a range of metrology solutions for the aerospace, automotive, electronics and medical industries in addition to all areas of the precision engineering sector. The team of engineers at Sempre provide solutions to challenges relating to quality control, inspection and metrology. “At Sempre we are trying to improve the productivity of our customers and British and Irish Manufacturing in general”, says Mike John, Head of technical delivery. For many medical products, 100% inspection and traceability are specified. These processes require automation, which in turn generates a need for accurate, repeatable fixturing. The service provided by Sempre includes the design, manufacture, build, testing and programming of all fixtures for all customers. The growth of this type of work, combined with the need to be more responsive to client demands has prompted the investment in a new Hurco VM10i, CNC machining centre. Mike John offered some positive feedback “Hurco provided some great support and training. We had no experience on Hurco machines before, but we have had a fantastic experience. It was an easy, seamless process”. Materials machined are typically aluminium, steels and some engineering plastics. Production cycle times are not prioritised as highly as the ability to produce repeatable, accurate components that look great. The decision to go with Hurco was based upon a number of important factors. The competitive price of the machine means that it was easier to budget for this level of technology. Additionally, the capacity of the Hurco VM10i (660 x 406 x 508 mm travels) allows all of Sempre’s work be covered within the footprint of this single product. Furthermore, Hurco were able to construct an attractive finance package that mitigated some of the risk associated with this type of capital investment. A major benefit of selecting Hurco as the machine tool provider is that now Sempre are up-to-speed and running with 3 axis manufacture, the next steps towards 5 axis or ProCobot automation will be simple and seamless, aligning neatly with Sempre’s ambitious plans for the future. The new Hurco VM10i is working out to be an intelligent investment for Sempre. Response times are quicker, and component quality has improved now that this work has been brought in-house. Prototype ideas and new fixturing solutions can be brought to fruition with shorter delivery-timescales, allowing projects to be completed ahead of schedule.
