Weka Pass Railway NZR English Electric DG's 791 & 770 at the Photorun Stop.

The Weka Pass Railway is home to a small collection of locomotives unlike the NZR A class Steam Locomotive no. 428 they also have Mitsubishi NZR Dsa 276, plus they have Diesel Traction Group's NZR De 512 / DE 1429 on the railway. But home is two Preserved NZR DG class Locomotives built between June 1956 and December 1956, Among them is DG 770 later DG 2232 built in June 1956 by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry / Robert Stephenson Hawthorn of United Kingdom, In her history of service 770 was known to have had a major incident in an old Tunnel in the Dashwood Pass on 19th May 1966 heavily damaging the body and a bent frame which was never strenghtened. Little is known but prior to TMS renumbering 770 became 2232 and she was retired in May 1983 and she alng with DG 791 was saved by the Weka Pass Railway at the time, In 1995 the loco was taken out of service due to a cracked bodie, another ex preserved DG 783 bogie was overhauled to be fitted to 770 and in 1997 she was repainted to traditional NZR Red with Large Yellow Nose Stripes on the nose as it was introduced, in 2014 she was taken out of service so it's Four-Cylinder Air Compressor could be replaced but has been returned to service, DG 791 the lead loco in this video was built in December 1956 but little is known about it's service life and 791 was the last built for NZR in December that year, in the 80s was renumbered 2468, But on 28th August 1983 the NZR operated a 'Farewell to the DG Class' excursion between Christchurch and Arthurs Pass on the Midland Line. Hauled by Recabbed DG 2007 and 'slave' unit DG 2468 the first and last DG class locomotives respectively, the excursion marked the end of the original DG class in regular service, sadly the following month DG 2007 ex DG 750 failed when it threw a con rod through the engine block and was placed in storage and scrapped later meaning the first member of the class was not rescued for preservation, but 2468 was lucky and was sold to the feldgling Weka Pass Railway along with 770 shortly after. Like 770 in 1997 she was repainted to traditional NZR Red with Large Yellow Nose Stripes on the Loco as Introduced, she was popular along with 770 at The Waipara Vintage Festivals and she along with 770 can be seen when fire bans are in place or when A 428 is out of service. I did not film more then once this footage was kept and restored personally for this occasion.
