INTERHEMISPHERIC COMMISSURES - Second episode of AKIVI’s Draw with Me program dedicated to the anatomy of the white matter. Today, Lou discusses the interhemispheric commissures. The interhemispheric commissures are bundles of white matter fibers that connect homologous regions of the cerebral hemispheres, ensuring bilateral integration of sensory, motor, and cognitive functions. The largest is the corpus callosum, composed of rostrum, genu, body, and splenium, which coordinates interhemispheric communication across cortical areas. The anterior commissure links the temporal lobes and olfactory structures, contributing to memory, language, and olfaction. The posterior commissure, located near the midbrain, plays a role in pupillary light reflex pathways. A smaller structure, the hippocampal commissure (commissure of the fornix), connects the hippocampal formations and participates in memory consolidation. Together, these commissures support the functional unity of the brain by synchronizing activity between hemispheres.
