JavaScript function that shuffles a string of characters | Math.floor(Math.random() * string.length)

In this video, we are going to learn how to shuffle a string of characters. As you probably know, in PHP, there is a built-in function for shuffling a string of characters called str_shuffle(). In JavaScript, however, there isn’t one. For this reason, we will have to create a custom function to do just that. We start off with a basic HTML page. In the head section, we import an external CSS file that resets the settings of the browsers. This file usually styles all HTML pages. And between the style tags, we write the CSS code that styles this particular HTML page. In the body section, there is a paragraph element. Inside this paragraph element, we are going to display the shuffled string of characters. We are going to use the id of the paragraph element to do that. Below the paragraph element, we have the script tags. Between these script tags, we are going to create our JavaScript function and, then, call it. So, we will name our JavaScript function shuffleString(). Its parameter is a string of characters. And its output is the same string of characters but shuffled. On the first line of code inside the function, we declare all variables that we are going to use to shuffle the string. Then, we make sure that the input received by the function is a string. For instance, if the function is provided with a number, that number will be treated as a string. Next, we get the length of the string, and use a for loop to transfer the characters of the original string to a new string but in a random order. To do that, we first select a random number between 0 (inclusive) and the length of the string (exclusive). Then, we extract the character whose index is the random number, and add it to the new string. Lastly, we remove the the newly transferred character from the original string. The number of times we repeat this procedure is the length of the original string. This is because we want to transfer all characters of the original string to the new string but in random order. So, as we gradually build up the new string, we also gradually empty the original string of its characters, one by one. In the initial stage, the new string is empty and the original string contains all characters, but in the final stage is the other way around, namely the new string contains all characters and the original string is empty. The only difference is that the new string contains the characters in a new random order. Now that the function is ready, we have to test it to see if it really works. First, we call the function. Then, we display the shuffled string in the console and in the browser. Now that the function has been tested and we’ve proven that it works, we will place the function in an external JavaScript file. This way we can use it in any project we want. We will store this external JavaScript file in the js folder in the root folder.
