How to carry a bike in a car? If you are new to bike commuting or have a long commute you could drive half way and then bike the rest. 1. Remove the front wheel. 2. Slide the bike into the back seat with the pedal facing up resting on the seat. 3. Put in the front wheel. You can remove a front wheel without deflating your tire if you have disc brakes or cantilever brakes. It can be done with road caliper style brakes but you will have to set the cable tension and barrel adjuster just right... it should work easily with a 23mm tire. Alternatively, you could carry your bike outside your car on a bike rack, which might be a better idea if you are transporting a muddy mountain bike. Always properly close any quick releases you opened before riding again. Tip 1: For quick release axle wheels be sure to reinstall the wheel properly. Learn about quick release wheels here • Removing and replacing a front quick-relea... Tip 2: For disc brakes make sure you put something clean between the brake pads like a bleed block (brake pad spacer) when the front wheel is out because accidentally squeezing the brake lever could mess up your brake adjustment. Tip 3: For cantilever brakes, to disengage the brake, squeeze the brake arms together and pull out the straddle cable (works the same way for v-brakes). Tip 4: You may need to push the passenger seat up a little to get the bike all the way in the car.. Tip 5: If you decide to lay the bike flat instead, always lay the bike flat with the chain facing up. Laying it on the drivetrain side could mess up your shifting.
