Musical Miniatures for the Classical Guitar - Steven Saulls, Classical Guitarist About the composer and the music... Ferdinando Carulli (1770–1841) was a prolific Italian composer and guitarist known as one of the founding fathers of the classical guitar tradition. He is particularly celebrated for his extensive body of work for the instrument, including pedagogical studies that are still used by students today. Born in Naples, Carulli was initially trained as a cellist. He switched his focus to the guitar around the age of 20, teaching himself due to a lack of local instructors. With no formal guitar training available, Carulli developed his own method of playing. He began giving popular concerts in Naples, which helped to make the guitar more popular and established his early reputation. After touring Europe, Carulli moved to Paris in 1808. The city was a major musical hub at the time, and his arrival sparked a "guitar mania" among Parisian society. In Paris, Carulli became a highly sought-after guitar teacher. He created a large body of pedagogical works to train a new generation of classical guitarists. His most famous work is the "Méthode complète pour guitare ou lyre, op. 27", published in 1810. This influential guitar method is still used by students worldwide. Ferdinando Carulli's Andante in A minor, Op. 241, No. 18 is a well-known and beautiful piece for classical guitar, often used as an instructional study for beginners. It was published around 1825 as part of his comprehensive guitar method, Méthode Complète pour Parvenir à Pincer de la Guitare, Op. 241. The piece is an andante (meaning "at a walking pace") in the classical style. It's known for its simple, beautiful, and melodic character. The composition features two main sections. One section presents a simple arpeggio texture, while the other introduces a melody with an Alberti bass-like accompaniment. This change in musical texture is a key pedagogical element of the piece. As a study from a method book, it is designed to build fundamental classical guitar skills. It helps students develop right-hand technique, navigate open chord voicings, and practice basic slurs (hammer-ons and pull-offs). About the performer... Steven began studying the guitar at age nine and has attended some of the finest music schools in the world including the Berklee College of Music (Boston), and the Mozarteum (Salzburg, Austria). He holds both a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Washington University (1980) and a Master of Music degree from the University of Arizona (1982). Over the past 40 years, Steven has performed hundreds of concerts throughout the United States, Central & South America and Europe. His recordings 'Modern Music for the Classical Guitar', ‘Espressivo’, and ‘Classical Guitarist Steven Saulls Performing Works by J.S. Bach, Manuel Ponce, and Federico Moreno Torroba’ have received wide acclaim both nationally and internationally. In addition to solo concerts, he has performed over 200 chamber works including guitar concerti (with orchestra) by Vivaldi, Ponce and Rodrigo. About the recording...
