Everybody knows about the classic ending to Game Seven of the 1992 NLCS, but not everyone knows that the Pirates charged back from a 3-1 deficit to get within an out of winning the Pennant. This post is the penultimate game of that series - a blowout in Atlanta. If you're a Pirates fan, I hope you enjoy this bittersweet post. ----------------------------------------------------------- After dropping Game Four at home to fall behind three games to one to the defending National League Champion Atlanta Braves, the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied. Behind starting pitcher, Bob Walk, they captured Game Five to send the series back to Atlanta. The Pirates knew that if they could get past Game Six, they had their ace, Doug Drabek, waiting in the wings. So, the objective for the Pirates was simple: Force a Game Seven, and keep their quickly closing "Win-Now" Window open. Waiting for the Bucs in the ATL was the reigning NL Cy Young Award Winner, Tom Glavine. Opposing him was a young knuckleballer that had gotten the best of Glavine in a 3-2 Pirates victory in Game Three, Tim Wakefield. Both sides traded scoreless first innings, but in the Top of the Second, the wheels fell off for Glavine, and the Braves. Barry Bonds led off the inning by hitting his first homer of the series (and, as it turned out, his final round tripper in a Pirates uniform), en route to an 8-run frame that knocked Glavine out of the game, and all but assured there would be a Game Seven.
