Learning Biblical Hebrew is hard. Really hard. Some of that is due to the challenging nature of the language itself. Some of it is due to difficult experiences students have had throughout their experience of education that get re-awakened when they try to learn Hebrew. Those painful experiences often manifest as either anxiety or shame, especially in response to the experience of "failing" in the classroom. These feelings—anxiety, shame, and failure—become significant barriers to students' ability to learn. And my priority as a professor is my students' learning. So, on the first day of class I invite my students to reorient their relationship with these barriers, to see failure as an essential part of the learning process, and to "hang up" their need to be right and their need to be competent before coming in the class so they free themselves up to learn through a pedagogy of play. Here's a version of the speech I give every year. I'm wearing a mask because this was filmed in 2021 when Covid restrictions were still in place. I'm speaking to another Hebrew professor who visited my classroom. Has a professor of yours ever invited you into the learning process this way? What impact did that make on your learning?
