Maggie Parker (1899-1987) was part of the musical Hammons Family of West Virginia, a sister to Lee and Burl. She sang and played banjo, and was a much-consulted herb doctor in the Pocahontas and Webster County region. She and the other Hammons were recorded by polymath Wayne Howard several times between 1971 and 1980. "Crossing the Rocky Mountains" comes from Howard's last session with Maggie, which began on Sept. 16, 1980.
