[Overview] The F-15 Eagle is a twin engine Strategic fighter that can be configured for air superiority or multirole strike. It is produced by the McDonnell Douglas Corporation. (1)(2) It's fire control system features a doppler radar which feeds data to a central computer that can be cast on a heads up display. (1)(2) The E model is a specialized two seated strike fighter designed to perform long range high precision attacks on ground targets.(2) [History] The Eagle developed out of the lessons of the Vietnam War as a successor to the F-4 Phantom. The first flight of the F-15A took place in 1972 and began military duty during the American Bicentennial.(1)(2) The C and D models came into service starting in 1979. (1)(2) During the 1st Gulf War in 1991, F-15's accounted for 34 out of 37 Airforce air to air kills while F-15e's took out SCUD missiles and other targets. (2)(3) A next gen variant being produced today is the F-15EX, focusing on expanded payload and standoff capabilities over stealth for its unique role.(4) [Stats] Weapons for the F-15 today include Aim-9 & Aim-120 missiles with an internal 20MM gun.(1)(2) Wingspan is over 42 feet, Length at almost 63 feet and a Height of 18 and a half feet. Top Speed reaches Mach 2 and 1/2 with a ceiling of 65,000 feet and range of 3,400 plus miles. (1)(2)(3) It carries the APG-70 radar and Lier Siegler flight control systems along with infrared targeting pods. (2) The E's equipment allows for high speed, low altitude terrain following flight through night and adverse weather.
