Explore the ruins of the Mammoth Hoist House, one of the most intact and untouched relics of Utah’s Tintic Mining District. Perched high above the town of Mammoth on the east slope of Mammoth Peak, this structure contains the hoist that once lowered men and equipment 2,600 feet into the earth. Today the building stands silent, its interior containing tools, ladders, containers, and machinery left exactly as they were when operations ended. With special permission, we flew the drone inside the hoist house and down into the adjacent glory hole: a dramatic subsidence crater revealing multiple abandoned adit entrances. This is a rare glimpse into one of the longest-operating mines in the Tintic District, a place that produced gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, and arsenic for over a century.
