Just in case you were wondering....here's how I build the first course of a dry stone wall! (usually with NO FABRIC. This was a special case, as per customer's insistence. Installed in a harmless manner, but entirely unnecessary) The main reason I wanted to do this demonstration video is so you could pragmatically see the process of how 1 stone is individually fit and placed into the wall, setting up a level foundation course. In this case, the home owner was convinced that the sandy soil of the hillside would wash through the wall and that would somehow be a problem, down the road. Fabric and gravel behind dry stone walls has been a bit of a hot subject, in some circles :) We've seen some walls built up, with fabric behind them and gravel poured behind the wall...and we've seen how that can cause problems. We've also seen that our dry stone walls with no fabric or gravel last for years and years without trouble. Hey, this guy right here is only in his 40's, so who knows? But we hope to get a century or two out of most of our walls. Then again, some may outlast an ice age or two and give future societies a pause to wonder. The fabric, as it was used on this wall--is probably unnecessary, but won't cause any harm. No gravel was used behind the wall, no pipe.
