WODE “Oldies 99.9” February 3, 2000 - Part # 1 of 15 – “The Day The Music Died”, featuring the Ritchie Valens story in words and music, digital restoration of reel to reel and cassette tapes of my annual tribute to Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper (J.P. Richardson) and Buddy Holly & The Crickets. This final edition of the special broadcast on WODE “Oldies 99.9” from the Allentown – Bethlehem – Easton, PA area, AKA: “The Lehigh Valley”. Music on this Part #1 includes Ritchie Valens songs: Come On Let’s Go, Donna, Framed, La Bamba, La Bamba ’87, Ooh My Head, That’s My Little Suzie, We Belong Together, etc. I also tell the tale of Ritchie Valens flipping a coin to win a seat on that fateful flight during “The Winter Dance Party” Tour. The seat on the plane was originally reserved for for Buddy Holly guitarist Tommy Allsup. BACKSTORY OF MY ANNUAL TRIBUTE: February 3, 1969: I first started writing, producing and hosting a 2-hour special tribute to Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly and The Crickets as “The Three Star Special”, this first editon of the special was on the 10th Anniversary of their deaths, and a special broadcast by WEEX - AM 1230 Easton, PA. Title of the show was reference to a 1959 charted record “The Three Stars” by Tommy Dee. 1970-1972: Radio broadcast WCRV - AM 1580 Washington, NJ, aka: “The Rock Of Northwest New Jersey”. Tribute was expanded to 3-Hours with additional songs and information on the artists. 1973-1974 : Radio broadcast WCRV - AM 1580 Washington, NJ. Name of the special changed to “The Day The Music Died” in reference to the #1 charted Don McLean Album and single “American Pie”. The produced show was continuously updated with more information about the artists and song selections. 1973: Reel to Reel tape copy sent to Al Kugler of Peer-Southern Organization, New York City, the original publishing company for Buddy Holly songs. . Kugler in turn mailed a quantity of ten copies of the new publication: “Buddy Holly: A biography in words, photographs and music” for listener giveaway during the broadcast. At that time Kugler called my tribute to Buddy Holly the most in-depth radio broadcast special on Buddy Holly in the USA… and I was just getting started! 1977: Radio broadcast WGPA - AM 1100 Bethlehem, PA. At this time the station was “Solid Gold 1100” format and I was Program/Music Director. 1981-1990: Radio broadcast WAEB - AM 790 Allentown, Pa., the show had now been expanded to five hours with more artist information and songs. 1991: Radio broadcast WKAP - AM 1320 “Oldies 1320” 2000: Radio broadcast WODE - “Oldies 99.9” FM, Easton, PA, final radio broadcast of the show. (Allentown - Bethlehem - Easton, PA cities are collectively known as “The Lehigh Valley”) I hope you enjoy this restoration of my “The Day The Music Died” special as broadcast February 3, 2000 on WODE – Oldies 99.9 This video features a digitial restoration of my original radio broadcast from February 3, 2000 on WODE 99.9 FM, Easton, Pa. I was a contract employee of WODE: writing, producing and hosting The Sunday Night Hall of Fame Show.
