It has been almost 10 years since the Federal Reserve launched its first quantitative easing (QE) program, leading to its $4.5 trillion balance sheet today. Other major central banks carried out parallel unprecedented expansions of their balance sheets. AEI’s Desmond Lachman will interview Chairman Ben Bernanke to consider the experience of these QE policies and the lessons to be learned. What are the challenges for the world’s central banks to reduce the size of their balance sheets going forward? In a future crisis, should QE be used again? How has the financial system changed in the QE era? After the conversation with Chairman Bernanke, a panel of financial and economic experts will further discuss these and related issues.
