Christy Hynes, Borris, Co. Carlow - 83 minutes of Memories, Folklore and Local Hisory from rural South Carlow Here is a 83 minute field-recording I made with 84 yer old Christy Hynes around South Carlow on Friday. I went up to Borris to meet him with the intention of doing a fixed camera interview about his time working in the nearby Clashganny Mills when he was a chap. Instead, the morning turned and the minute I got into his jeep, he began talking and telling me stuff, so out came my phone. Shortly into the chat, he tells me that he has to go feed some bullocks for his son before calling to the old mill. So one we went and what transpired was the windy road of life and unplanned magic; rambles, chats and memories. Although I had my studio camera with me, 99% of this recorded on my iPhone as the journey took different twists and turns. This is a pure field-recording but the content shared is incredible and ranges from his memories of old and no redundant railing lines, his memories of childhood, his 15 brothers and sisters, his old neighbours and their homes and farmyards, changes in the landscape, picking fraughans and Patron Sunday, farming beliefs and cures, an amazing story about his father and the grave of a poor old tramp who in buried in Ballymurphy, accounts of salmon spawning under the Blackstairs and eating rabbits and a solid chat about his time working in Clashganny Mill. There are gorgeous moments here too - quiet moments and this is a great piece for anyone interested in social and local history but also just for to spend time with Christy and enjoy his company. I will produce a detailed and timed list of contents in the coming days but in the meantime I’d suggest you give this a play and run with the flow. This is a part of the country that is often forgotten about and a few mile from where I live. I live on the Wexford side of the Blackstairs and Mount Leinster and Christy on the Carlow side. Although a proud Carlow man, the people in this area all have deep roots and connections to the Gaelic families on the north Wexford side and this goes back to pre-county systems and is part of a much wider Gaelic headpsace from this part of Ireland. The recording literally ends when I notice my time and realise I have to head back across the mountain and pick my children from school and the moment I said that, my phone battery died. This is the real stuff. No high production values, no logos or supporters and I do these recordings in cases like this as otherwise, they will never be done. Enjoy the chat. Text: Michael Fortune
