Crested (Oriental) Honey Buzzard (Pernisptilorhynchus) Afrikaans: Oosterse Wesperdief Originally photographed by Kate Morris on the 30th January 2021 After attending the exceptionally informative webinar on the Crested Honey Buzzard presented by Dr Callan Cohen, alongside hosts Mike Buckham and Dave Winter, we found ourselves reflecting on what was undoubtedly one of the most demanding yet exhilarating twitches we have ever undertaken. Memories came flooding back of the long hours spent scanning the skies from Spanish Farm Hill, driven by hope, patience, and sheer determination as we waited for that magical moment. It took four separate attempts before we could finally and confidently say that we had seen the first Crested Honey Buzzard recorded in Southern Africa — a sighting that made every minute of anticipation worthwhile. Beyond the bird itself, the experience was enriched by the camaraderie of so many like-minded birders, all united by a shared passion and the thrill of witnessing a truly historic event.
