Charles-Valentin Alkan wrote several (incredibly orchestral-sounding) military marches, and other works that resemble military marches. This piece evokes many varied colors and textures, as well as imitating military drums, flutes/piccolos, and brass instruments. It has been described as having "fascinating affinities with Mahler." (Mahler had not even been born yet; this piece was composed in 1859.) Smith recorded this work twice: Once in 1969, on an 1851 Schneider Grand Fortepiano (a period instrument). This is the second recording, made much later in Smith's life. It's from the 2-disc set that has the three chamber pieces, Etudes Op. 35 Nos. 10, 11, and 12, Marche Funebre Op. 26 (also a second recording), and Chant in E Major Op. 38a. No. 1.
