While my previous day on the 2025 Tour Divide had been spent traversing a single mountain pass, day 22 brought an entirely different challenge: a full day of road riding without the benefit of my higher gears due to ongoing mechanical issues on my bike. Leaving Cuba, New Mexico at an early hour, I first stopped at a car wash to pressure wash the previous day's mud off my bike. After re-oiling my drivetrain, I headed out into the desert and began spinning my way down the road. As the day heated up, so did the headwinds and it was fairly slow going later in the morning before the route finally turned south and left the wind coming from the side rather than the front. Still, the heat was unrelenting and, reaching a "tunnel" (more of a bridge) I reflected that it was the first shade I'd seen in 3.5hrs. I reached the town of Grants, New Mexico fairly early in the evening after covering 197km over the course of the day. Deciding to get a good night's sleep and to hit the road early the next morning to beat the head, I called it a day there. I was on the road by 4:30am on day 23, aiming for another big day. Knowing the temperature would again be the biggest challenge, I enjoyed the first 4-5 hours of riding before the heat really picked up. As I did, I reflected on some of the physical challenges and how I was mentally dealing with them - the strong emotion of this is captured in the video. I reached Pie Town around noon, and after wolfing down a large lunch I headed back out into the heat, onto gently rolling hills before starting a couple more significant climbs as I entered National Forest land later in the afternoon. I ended the day at the side of the trail in the Gila National Forest, pitching my tent as the sun went down after 211km of riding, and 16 hours after leaving Grants. Only 400km to go to the finish! ----- I rode the Tour Divide in part as a personal challenge, and in part as a fundraiser for cancer research through the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation - one of the top cancer research institutions in the world. At time of writing we've raised more than $11,500. Learn more here: https://supportthepmcf.ca/ui/DIY/p/da...
