HØLØDØMØR is a project by Yuliya Fedorovych that depicts the history and consequences of the genocide of Ukrainians orchestrated by the Soviet Union. I. Occupation Ukraine possesses broad fertile land with rich black earth. There never was and could never be a famine in these fertile lands. However, in the 1920s, Ukraine was occupied by the Soviet Union, led by Stalin, which in 1932-1933 orchestrated an extensive genocide — the Holodomor. II. Enslavement Ukrainians have always wanted to work on their land, but the Soviets took away their land, livestock, and property. They forced them to join collective farms and work for the state for meager pay. III. Deportation The most respected and prosperous individuals in their communities were sent to remote, deserted areas of the Soviet Union. All their property was confiscated, and they were taken thousands of kilometers from home without any means of subsistence. Many exiles died on the road or immediately upon arrival. IV. The Robber To take Ukrainians’ valuables, the Soviets created a chain of stores called "Torgsin" where hungry people could exchange them for small amounts of food. Through "Torgsins" the Soviets seized the equivalent of 14 tons of pure gold from Ukrainians. V. Forbidden to live In 1932, the Soviets adopted a resolution known as the law of five spikelets. Anyone accused of collecting just a few ears of wheat or frozen potatoes from a collective farm’s fields was arrested or shot on the spot—even children. VI. Survival Ukrainian villagers were forbidden to move to cities or other republics of the Soviet Union in search of food. Hungry and desperate, they ate tree bark, leaves, beetles, and birds. VII. A tragedy of grand scale In June 1933, at the peak of the Holodomor, about 28,000 people died of starvation every day. VIII. Devastation People dropped dead in the streets. The living picked up and delivered the bodies of the dead for burial. In return for this terrible work, they received meager breadcrumbs. IX. Lost future Among the millions of those who died during the Holodomor a third were children. Future generations of Ukrainians were lost forever. X. Unpunished evil The Soviets hid the Holodomor from the world behind an iron curtain by spreading propaganda and intimidating witnesses. No one was ever punished for these crimes.
